EEMDR
EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a method of psychotherapy that promotes emotional healing from traumatic life experiences at an accelerated rate. Once it was assumed that healing from severe emotional pain would take a long time. Now we know that our minds and bodies are hard-wired to heal themselves. EMDR works by facilitating the process where an individual can tap into his/her own healing resources.
EMDR is proven to be effective with a variety of issues including PTSD, stress, grief, social anxiety, anxiety, panic, OCD, phobias, and addictions. For more detailed information go to http://www.emdr.com/what-is-emdr/
Sometimes life experiences can affect us so deeply that months and even years later, we still feel the impact in our daily lives. When our history becomes more than just our history, it may be trauma.
Traumatic events can range from the profoundly traumatic: war, violence, accidents, physical or sexual abuse; to more common life experiences: rejection, humiliation, exclusion, being ignored. Both types of trauma can produce symptoms of traumatic stress that impact our lives in the present and in the future.
It is not necessary to re-live the traumatic event during an EMDR session. You do not even have to talk about the event in detail. EMDR allows the client to reach new insights and healing images without suggestions from the therapist because healing is within you. During the EMDR session you will be fully present.
When you are present in this moment, you break the continuity of your story, of past an future. Then true intelligence arises, and also love. -Eckhart Tolle
When fully resolved (usually 3-10 sessions) symptoms of PTSD, accute stress, or moral injury will no longer trouble you. Although you will not forget what happened, thinking about it will not be disturbing. Negative beliefs associated with the trauma will change to more positive beliefs and you will be able to live your life more fully.
Your little, senseless [fears],... swirling lightly off on a mad course [of their own] like feathers dancing insanely in the wind, have no substance...Let them all go, dancing in the wind, dipping and turning till they disappear from sight, far, far outside of you.
- from A Course In Miracles.
Targeting the symptoms and triggers of anxiety and panic using EMDR combined with cognitive therapy and mindfulness practices can lead to freedom from panic attacks and constant worry. EMDR can help with generalized anxiety, specific phobias, OCD, and agoraphobia as well as specific areas of anxiety such as social anxiety, fears of public speaking, anxiety related to aging, etc.
After working extensively with EMDR for the past 20 years, I have found it to be the most effective psychotherapeutic method for resolving the issues listed below.
In addition to Level II EMDR training, I have completed advanced training in EMDR for anxiety, phobias, and OCD; addictions and dysfunctional compulsive behaviors (DeTUR).
EMDR has been endorsed by the World Health Organization as the front-line treatment for PTSD.
I always came out of my EMDR therapist's office reeling (in a good way); and the things I learned have stayed with me and enriched my conscious mind. It's a powerful process. Irecommend it.
