Contemplative psychotherapy is an in-depth approach to personal exploration based on the core Buddhist teaching that all human beings are fundamentally good and possess an inner wisdom that can lead to healing and self awareness. The goal of contempative psychotherapy is to uncover this inner brilliance and tap into inner resources to enhance your wellbeing and the gifts you bring to the world.
This involves entering into a mindful and compassionate inquiry into your true self (we are not who we think we are!) as you explore your current life experiences and move through any obstacles of conditioned mind or old patterns that may obstruct progress on your life path.
Emotions are an important part of this deep inner work. In Vajrayana Buddhism, even emotions we consider negative are viewed with curiosity, mindfulness, and compassion as they contain wisdom to aid in this inquiry.
I have a master's degree in contemplative psychology from Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado. For a more through explanation of how contemplative psychotherapy works, visit this link to read the words of Karen Kissel Wegela: https://www.lionsroar.com/youre-basically-good-the-benefits-of-contemplative-psychotherapy/
Contemplative sessions often begin with a brief mindfulness meditation. As the session progresses, attention may be called to emotions, or sensations in the physical body to help you view your exploration from the deepest perspective.
Comtemplative psychotherapy helps us seperate the story-line we have attached to our life experience, (often based on past conditioning) from the direct experience, so that we can move forward cultivating presense and wellbeing.
Using the five Buddha families and their colors combined with Brainspotting, this offers a unique way of working with stressful events, traumatic memories of the past, conflictual decision making and problem solving. Each of the Buddha families has its own color, elements, and characteristics to bring to your inquiry.
